How to Build a Podcast

Producing a podcast may not be as simple as it seems but Quill is here to support you every step of the way. Once you make the plunge and decide to join the crazy world of podcasting (congrats!) you still need to have a clear understanding of the goals and purpose of your podcast. For brands, you may be focusing on lead gen or marketing. If you’re an indie podcaster, maybe you’re trying to learn more about a certain subject. Or maybe it’s just for fun! There’s no wrong answer but it will determine where you go from here!

  1. Ideating - Based on your goals you need to identify your ideal listener profile and from there choose the best theme, concept, and overall structure to best reach this audience and get your message across.
  2. Creating - From here, things start to get really fun! You get to start building the bones of your podcast: selecting a name, designing cover art, and deciding the cadence of how often you will publish episodes.
  3. Planning your Episodes - From here you can start scripting and planning your episodes! Depending what format you choose for your podcast, episode planning could happen many different ways. This step might involve research, developing Q&As, or more detailed and specific scripting.
  4. Guest Coordination & Scheduling - If your podcast format involves guest speakers and interviews, remember that there is a ton of work that goes into tracking down guests and coordinating with them before the recording.
  5. Gettin’ Techy - Next comes all the fun techy stuff! Choosing the right hosting platform, the right equipment, recording or remote recording software. and setting up your website.
  6. Recording- It’s time to record your podcast! This might involve remote recording software and detailed tech set-up, or be as simple as recording at home on your laptop, but either way, sound quality and proper technical production can make or break a podcast, and it’s important to get it right.
  7. Editing- Editing your episodes can include anything from basic arrangement to mixing, mastering, music licensing, music composition, sound design, and more.
  8. Distributing- Once you’ve finalized your episode, there are a few more steps before you can get it live and publish your show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Play!
  9. Marketing- Production is only half the work! The other half is marketing your show and making sure you’re driving people to your awesome podcast. Growing your podcast audience is tricky business but our podcast experts can guide you every step of the way.
  10. Analyzing- The best podcasters are always thinking about how to improve their show, and one way to do this is by analyzing data. When are your listeners tuning out of your show? What demographics are tuning in? Analytics are especially crucial if you’re looking to bring on sponsors or advertisers. Ask us how!
