Serial: Podcast Review

November 16, 2019

What were you doing two months ago at this exact moment? Can you walk me through your actions on a Tuesday three weeks ago - minute by minute, recalling your every move and whereabouts? Likely not. Serial starts off with this simple question - how much of what we recall is accurate, and how much is a story we tell ourselves?

You’ve likely heard of Serial - after all, it’s the podcast that sparked the podcast craze, turning the average listener into an amateur detective, and burning one question into our collective minds: Did He Do It? If you never listened to Serial on its first run, this is the time to press play. No narrative podcast has ever captured the flow, storytelling, compelling twists and turns, and absolute NEED to listen to the next episode quite like Serial. It turned Sarah Koenig into a star, the theme song into a classic, and it opened up questions about our justice system that still haven’t been answered. I often listen to that opening episode over and over, trying to decide whether I would be good at recalling details of a day months ago, and recounting them to seal a boy’s fate. I think the answer is a resounding no.
